Dark Chocolate Avocado Mousse

Dark Chocolate Avocado Mousse

If the thought of making Dark Chocolate Avocado Mousse from scratch seems intimidating or daunting, don’t fret. Because I have just the recipe for you! It’s super easy to make, comes together in a food processor, and has just a handful of ingredients (many of which you may already have on hand). Sound easy enough?

In addition to being a breeze to make, this Dark Chocolate Avocado Mousse is tasty and healthy, thanks to nutrient-packed ingredients such as avocado, raw cacao and dark chocolate.

Yes, you’re reading that right, avocado! It’s used here to add creaminess and richness to the mousse without having to add dairy or other unhealthy fats.

Wait, can you taste the avocado?

We all love avocado ~ avocado toast, tacos, guacamole… But in dessert? It does sound strange, I agree. But it works here, promise! And no, with the rich flavor of the chocolate, you cannot taste the avocado.

The avocado adds creaminess and healthy fats

When you purée ripe avocado into this mousse it adds a few key things:

  • richness
  • creaminess
  • healthy fats

Not to mention, avocados are full of nutrients such as fiber, antioxidants, vitamins C, E and K, plus folate, magnesium and potassium.

That’s a lot of nutrients in one dessert!

Here’s the recipe rundown…

As I mentioned, it’s basically a one-bowl recipe. After you melt the chocolate, which you can do in the microwave, you add everything to a small food processor, give it a few whizzes, and you have mousse. Voila! No waiting, no chilling of the mousse even.

I like to serve them in 4-oz ramekins, which makes a fun yet elegant presentation.

Aside from the avocado and dark chocolate, this recipe calls for cacao. Cacao is the raw, unsweet powder that comes from cacao beans (where chocolate comes from).

Like avocado, it’s also full of nutrients such as polyphenols, which are beneficial compounds naturally present in certain plant foods. Cacao actually has more antioxidants than blueberries. Now that’s super (food)!

For cacao I like the brand Navitas. And for the dark chocolate my go-to brand is Theo, either 70% or 85% dark chocolate, which is available at most supermarkets.

This mousse can be made in a small food processor

The other handful of ingredients in this recipe include a little maple syrup, unsweet almond milk, vanilla, some cinnamon and salt. That’s it!

Except for the delicious optional topping ~ dukkah. Optional but I highly recommend!

What is dukkah?

Curious about dukkah? Essentially it’s a blend of toasted nuts, seeds and spices, either sweet or savory. Check out my sweet dukkah and my savory dukkah recipes to learn more.

For the dukkah used in this mousse the recipe is below. I went with toasted coconut, pistachios, almonds, chia and hemp seeds.

Dukkah is also great to sprinkle on oatmeal, yogurt and almond butter toast

Dukkah adds a great crunch and color factor with this mousse. I highly recommend making it, as it’s also good to sprinkle on smoothies, oatmeal, granola, yogurt, and even almond butter toast.

Lastly, the pomegranate arils add more crunch and color. If you can find the arils (aka seeds) already removed from the whole pomegranate this will make your life much easier. Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, etc. usually sells them in the produce section.

Top mousse with sweet dukkah for color and crunch

Wrapping it up…

I hope you like this easy and tasty recipe as much as I do. It’s great for dinner parties, kids, and just about anyone who loves chocolate!

Instructions
  1. make dukkah: in a small bowl combine all dukkah ingredients and set aside for garnish
  2. make mousse: chop and melt dark chocolate in a double boiler or in 30-second increments in the microwave (about 1 minute total if using microwave, less than 5 if using a double boiler)
  3. to a small food processor add avocado, cacao, maple, salt, cinnamon, vanilla, melted chocolate, and about half of almond milk
  4. blend mousse, adding more milk if needed or desired; it will be thick without refrigerating, so you can use more than 1/2 cup milk if you plan to chill and serve cold
