Spiced Nut + Seed Butter

Spiced Nut + Seed Butter

It’s officially breakfast time with this Spiced Nut + Seed Butter. Toasted walnuts, almonds and cashews, flax seeds and cinnamon. All you need is some good toasty bread and latte of your choice. Breakfast. Done. Right.

Of course you can buy some pretty great nut butters in the store, but it’s also fun to make it at home. Plus, a good jar of organic almond butter can set you back up to $20! Making your own can be done for much less.

Spiced Nut + Seed Butter is as easy as 1-2-3:

  1. roast
  2. blend
  3. enjoy!

And the ingredients are easy, too.

You’ll need:

  • raw mixed nuts, such as almonds, walnuts and/or cashews
  • flax seeds
  • maple syrup
  • ceylon cinnamon
  • salt

And, an optional ingredient is a little melted coconut oil~ if needed or desired.

For the nuts, I use a combo of whole almonds, walnuts and cashews. You can also get sliced or slivered almonds, which would make this a little faster to make, as they break down in the food processor quicker than whole almonds.

To roast nuts spread on a parchment-lined sheet pan and bake at 350° until toasty and fragrant, about 10 – 15 minutes. When roasting nuts watch that they do not burn, and some nuts may roast quicker than others. I separate them out on the pan (or use different pans) for each type of nut.

You can use whole, sliced or slivered almonds in the recipe

The flax seeds are optional, but I am always looking for ways to add in extra fiber and other beneficial nutrients. Flax seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for heart health. Flax are also high in lignans, a beneficial plant compound that acts as an antioxidant and potential cancer fighter. Flax also contain both soluble and insoluble fiber, important for the good bacteria in our gut.

TIP: ground flaxseed are better digested in the body, so when using flax go for the ground ones

With the maple syrup this is optional in the recipe, but I like a little sweetness in my nut butters. You can omit the maple or you can use honey.

Don’t skip the cinnamon or salt! The cinnamon adds a natural sweetness to the nut butter and salt brings out the flavor. Go with ceylon cinnamon, which is “true” cinnamon.

Make a healthy breakfast toast with Spiced Nut + Seed Butter

Blend baby blend…

Once the nuts are toasted, and while still warm, add them to a small food processor to blend. Blending them while still warm helps to get it going.

This part takes a while, so be patient! At first it will be crumbly, then chunky, but keep going. It will eventually be creamy. This is the part where you can add melted coconut oil one teaspoon at a time.

Once nuts are a creamy consistency, add remaining ingredients ~ flax, maple, cinnamon and salt.

Toss warm toasted nuts in a small food processor to blend

Toast, spread, bliss out!

To make breakfast a toast like this one, toast bread, top with Spiced Nut + Seed Butter, sliced apple or banana, hemp seeds and extra cinnamon. Optional: drizzle with a little maple or honey.
